If you live in the Southern California area, then Joe Novy, CJF is the most valuable individual a horse owner can possibly know. Frankly, I think he is one of the most knowledgeable, observant, and naturally gifted therapeutic farriers in the entire industry, if not THE most. In just one six-week shoeing cycle, Joe was able to turn my irritable and borderline dangerous 16.2h 21-year-old Thoroughbred mare—who had formerly been a successful dressage show horse, but had somehow become “not quite right” in her hind end and thus had been unrideable for more than a decade—back into the sound, relaxed, and happy horse I had originally bought as a 4-year-old when no one else could, including the experts at a very well-respected regional equine hospital!! In just a few additional months of Joe’s care, we were actually able to ride again—something I had never even dared to dream was possible. My mare’s front feet have even enlarged two full shoe sizes, from 0 to 2—at the age of 21 years old!!—as a result of Joe’s care. I have used Joe every six weeks for my two horses since the fall of 2025, and after seeing the proof of Joe’s skill, I will make sure never to leave his service area as long as I own horses. There simply is no comparison to Joe—and I’ve used or consulted basically every major, well-known farrier in the Los Angeles metropolitan area in the nearly two decades that I’ve owned horses in Southern California. On top of his amazing work, Joe is kind and patient, he genuinely loves animals, and he is extremely professional—from his slow-motion iPad analysis of your horse’s gait on your initial visit, to his automated text appointment scheduling and reminder system, to his personal dependability and punctuality. While some farriers refuse to allow others to oversee their work due to ego issues, Joe actually encourages owners to work alongside a veterinarian so that X-rays can guide the specific angles for shoeing, rather than assumptions or guesswork. Despite his already formidable knowledge and skill level, Joe is strongly committed to continuing his own education, always wanting to learn, grow, and utilize the latest research-backed shoeing techniques. He is even dedicated to teaching other farriers to help improve the industry as a whole! Despite being in high demand with a packed schedule, Joe is always still willing to make time to help, even after hours, when a horse has an emergency abscess. In conclusion, I feel that Joe was directly responsible for giving me back my heart horse, and it is always a tremendous pleasure to have him work on my horses. I started to use Joe last year when my daughter’s pony came down with laminitis and couldn’t even walk out of her stall. It was amazing to me to see Joe work closely with our veterinarian to come up with a good, individualized corrective plan that was specific to our pony's needs at the time. He is very well educated and experienced, but also open-minded, which are great qualities to find in a farrier, Very soon after Joe started managing our pony's feet we started to see improvement.
